China is the Largest Market for Water Treatment Equipment and Consumables

The 2012 market for water treatment and consumables will be over $25 billion at equivalent world pricing. This is the conclusion reached by the McIlvaine Company through aggregating data in a number of its market reports. (www.mcilvainecompany.com)

Because of its large investment in municipal wastewater, power and industrial plants, China will be the leading purchaser this year. Furthermore, China’s lead will lengthen in the next five years.

In general, the costs and selling prices of equipment and consumables are lower. In some cases, they are much lower due to inferior quality. However, even for equivalent quality, the prices are often less than half those in the U.S. and Europe. Since much of the equipment and consumables are now made in China, it is necessary to view the market both in terms of the equivalent world price and the local pricing.

The big complex pumps and centrifuges along with the patented membranes and treatment chemicals are sold at world prices. But clarifiers, sand filters, non-woven cartridges, valves for water applications and basic chemicals are sold at less than half the world prices.

Despite the low prices, many international companies are profiting nicely in this market place. They have built manufacturing facilities, have local sourcing and are competitive. They are also exporting to other countries from China.

China is now more actively enforcing environmental and safety regulations. This is leading to improved quality of equipment and is providing more opportunities for international companies who are already addressing stringent regulations.
